These services are intended to enable people who have been disturbed by alcohol and other drugs to begin their lives anew. Drug abuse has been known to destroy the lives of its victims, shatter their dreams, and break their relationships and families. There are many choices of drug abuse services that patients can take.
One of these services is detoxification. It is done by registered nurses, physicians, and addiction counselors. It refers to a service in which all drugs found in a patient’s body are expunged chemically. Adult detox is often conducted only by experienced medical personnel and must be done in a setting that has been well controlled.
The medical practitioners will then deal appropriately with the effects of withdrawal that are expected to hit back at the patient after the detox is done. Some other services that are offered alongside detox include health assessment and stabilization, holding of information, and counseling sessions and referral. Detoxification is not a cure for drug abuse and should be taken alongside other drug abuse services for better results.
Another common type of drug abuse services is counseling offered by addiction counselors. Unlike the other types of treatment options that deal with the physical aspect of drug abuse, counseling gives a glimpse into the abuser’s thoughts and feelings. Counseling deals with the spiritual, psychological, and emotional aspects of the abuse of drugs.
It looks at the primary cause of the habit and tries to come up with a solution. Without proper counseling, recovery from drug abuse would be hard because medicine alone cannot deal with the issues that caused the patient to become a drug abuser, only counseling can. Types of counseling include individual, which is meant for one person at a time, and group counseling, which is offered to a group of drug abusers taking treatment together.
Residential drug abuse services are where the patient can reside in the treatment center for more than 20 days, depending on the service provider and the depth of the drug abuse situation. In this form of treatment, clients will receive counseling, medical treatment, and participate in numerous other events that will help them recover.
Inpatient drug abuse services are similar to residential ones. The only difference is that they go much deeper than any other program. It is often considered by many drug abusers to be the final option. Most of those who undergo it actually recover and are able to prevent relapses.
The only downside about inpatient drug abuse services is that it is the most expensive when compared to the other services. However, some places are a bit cheaper than others, especially those that are owned by the government or are owned by charity groups and organizations like churches.
On the other hand, outpatient drug abuse services are those that are given to patients without requiring them to reside in the treatment center. They receive treatment and then go back to their homes. It is the most preferred option by drug abusers who want treatment yet are busy with work or academics.
